The fleur-de-lis has been around for centuries appearing on relics from ancient civilizations. The symbol is said to represent a lily, the flower the emblem is named after, or possibly an iris, which more closely resembles the outline design and yellow colour – where that is relevant. The fleur de lis has many associations including links to representing Christianity and the Virgin Mary, French royalty where the symbol came to represent the monarch’s divine right to rule, and boy scouts where many scouting organizations use the fleur-de-lis in their visual identity.
In architecture, the fleur-de-lis is often placed on top of iron gates and fences, as a pointed defence against intruders, and used in interiors incorporated into cornices and friezes.
