Decorative Plaster Columns and Capitals

Decorative plaster columns and capitals offer a splendid sense of grandeur to both public and large private properties. We can supply them for you in either full column or half-column varieties, the latter of which can be mounted flush against walls. Plain or flute styles are also available, and our stock includes columns moulded in the Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian fashion.

Creating Decorative Plaster Columns and Capitals

The materials used in the creation of our columns and half-columns will differ depending on whether they are intended for internal or external use. Decorative plaster columns and capitals will generally be made from fibrous plaster when designed for internal use. Meanwhile, those made for external decoration will normally be formed from Jesmonite.

It is also possible for us to form plain, modern column casings from glass-reinforced gypsum (GRG), but these are not particularly decorative beyond hiding unsightly infrastructure. We will not use this material to make capitals, however.

Deciding on Column Styles

When considering the column or half-column and capital styles you wish to use, you may wish to also consider what the feature will be used for once it has been installed. This may result in design changes as best fits the need of the project.

For example, full columns are typical of interior and new build applications, while half-columns can be utilised to cloak structural supports on exterior applications. Fluted columns are also ideal for this, as they make it easy to obfuscate steel uprights.

Pilasters

It is possible to come looking for pilasters, rather than columns or half-columns, without realising the differences between the two. Pilasters are square architectural elements used to give the appearance of a supporting column and to articulate an extent of wall. They also only have an ornamental function.

Normally, a pilaster will consist of a flat surface raised from the main wall surface. They are often treated the same as columns, with a capital at the top, a plinth base, and other decorative elements included in the overall design. We can also produce these as part of required restoration or redecoration for your interior.

Our Match to Existing Service

If the complete restoration of your property requires a unique design for its columns or half-columns, you can always speak to our team about our match to existing service. This work involves using an impression mould, which in industry terms is also referred to as a “site squeeze”. This site squeeze is taken from a section of an undamaged or intact feature, in order to form the basis of a replica mould.

Once the mould has been made, we will use it to manufacture a replacement section. The new design created will be a mirror image of any previous designs that no longer exist, or blend effortlessly with those parts of the design that are still present.

Depending on specifications, we may work with historians, specialists in period architecture, interior designers, and project managers to ensure total accuracy in the finish. This will be on top of ensuring you have the design you want and that best suits the needs of your project.

Installing Columns and Capitals

Our team will work with you to schedule a date that suits your needs for the supply and installation of your plaster columns, half-columns, and capitals. The details of this work will depend on the project itself, but the result will always be a magnificent and precise finish that reflects any architectural design or style needed. To learn more about how we can assist with this, please get in touch with us.
