Faux finishing is a term that covers a range of specialist paint finishes, some that mimic the style of natural materials such as wood, marble or stone, others that create the illusion of space, depth or age. These effects can be applied over all manner of substrates including wood, metal and plaster.
Different types of faux specialist finishes
Trompe l’oeil (‘to deceive the eye’) is a term that refers to the application of paints to create the illusion of three-dimensional landscapes, objects (vignettes), or figures on a two-dimensional surface, a decorating method that became particularly popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, and the technique often successfully creates more “space” in a room and an intriguing design feature.
Marbling is the process of replicating the appearance of marble on a surface using paints, glazes, and specialised tools to create a marble effect that resembles metamorphic rock and at a fraction of the cost of installing natural marble.
Similarly, Wood Graining is the technique of replicating natural wood graining onto multiple surfaces using the application of glazes and pigments with specialised tools.
Metallics can sometime refer to liquid metal paints, or more commonly Gilding with gold leaf or metal leaf. Liquid metal is a paint which often contains a high percentage of metal powder, and once cured the surface takes on the visual properties of cast metal. Gilding differs in that the process involves applying very thin sheets of gold leaf or metal leaf over a solid surface. Gilding with gold leaf creates the illusion of a solid gold object and is often applied to embellish decorative mouldings, coffered ceilings, cornices and a host of other fixtures, fittings and ornamentation.
Aging and patina effects can be applied by specialist decorators using their painting skills to create the impression of a surface or object appearing to be older than it is, introducing age or wear beyond its years.
