Painting & Decorating

Painting traditional buildings requires a different approach to modern buildings. We cater for both. In addition to modern, impermeable paints we regularly work with permeable (breathable) products such as distemper paints, emulsions, clay paints and limewash and any product suitable for use in traditional and historic buildings.

Wallpapering

Wallpaper is another area where historic buildings need special consideration compared to their modern counterparts, but again Artisan Painting & Decorating has the knowledge and ability to cater for both equally. We are wallpaper hangers and installers for all types and periods, Anaglypta wallpapers, embossed wallpaper, flock wallpapers, metallic wallpaper, the list goes on and on.

Specialist decorators

When it comes to the features, flourishes and highlights that truly make a project or space memorable, our skilled team of specialist decorators have the knowledge and passion to diligently execute to a high standard. Paint patina and aging effects, paint marbling and paint that looks like wood all types of broken colour work are all special effects representative of our decorative artist skills over more conventional decorating contractors.

Gilding

Also known as gold leafing, gilding is a traditional decorating technique where real gold leaf is applied onto a hard surface. Gold leaf is available in a wide variety of karats and shades. The most commonly used gold is 22-karat yellow gold. It is a popular embellishment to create the aura of luxury and high status and dates all the way back to ancient Egypt. Please contact us to discuss your gilding and specialist decorating requirements.

Wood staining

Wood treatment as a service has several different processes available to choose from. Wood staining is the application of a product to penetrate and colour wood, as opposed to varnished wood which has a surface layer to enhance grain and protect the wood. Polishing wood with wax can also enhance colour, feed and protect it from deterioration. Our decorators can advise you on the most appropriate method of wood restoration if you are unsure and execute it to perfection.

Paint stripping

Removal of paint can be a specialised operation, especially in heritage conservation or where the use of dichloromethane (DCM) paint strippers is a requirement. We are certified professionals in the use of DCM paint removal methods and the application of chemical poultice, such as peel away paint remover. Experience is highly important when removing paint as part of a restoration and redecoration scheme.

Decorating Condition Surveys

The assessment and ongoing monitoring of building decoration condition. We provide detailed surveys, conservation and remediation advice, undertaken by experienced decorating specialists.

A survey will document the current condition of decorated surfaces for future reference, provide insights into areas that require closer monitoring, and identify potential preventative maintenance or repairs.
