Fluting, also known as reeding, is a series of regular, concave grooves or ribs running vertically down a surface. Often seen on columns and pilasters, in this cornice design the flutes are interspersed by patrae, small flower-like medallions which repeat every twelve flutes, reflecting the refinement and sophistication of the Regency period.
