Private developer converting part of the Adelphi Theatre into residential properties.
The Adelphi Theatre (situated on the Strand in London) has a long and involved history stretching back to 1806. We completed a fibrous plaster ceiling restoration project within one of the oldest Grade II listed buildings in London’s west end – formally known as the Adelphi Theatre restaurant.
We were contacted by the main contractor to undertake a survey of the building and provide a report of our findings including measurements. Upon our visit we discovered lots of holes in the original fibrous ceilings (which had been covered up by a suspended ceiling).
The original plasterwork was badly deteriorated and delicate and had been damaged in several places. We therefore secured the ceiling before any work took place.
We undertook a full site survey and recommended that we secure the entire ceiling as it was vulnerable. We discovered missing rose and decorative patterned plasterwork and therefore took site squeezes of the old plasterwork to produce bespoke moulds, in order to replicate the original plasterwork.
We restored original plasterwork on the ceiling and manufactured and installed new pieces in situ. All whilst conserving the historic fabric of this listed building – which was more than 100 years old. We secured the cornice with wadding and stainless steel screws and hessian wadding dipped in casting plaster. We then reinstated the ceiling afterwards.
“Artisan Plastercraft provided an excellent service ensuring strict conditions of Conservation Officer were adhered to. Mike Arney ran the project in an extremely professional manner and we always felt he was working with BHC and our design team.
Artisan Plastercraft’s standard of completed work is of the highest quality. The work at Gatti House has received some of our most positive feedback from our client and design team. We would be delighted to work with Artisan again.”
