What is Lime Plaster?
Lime plaster is an often-used type of plaster building material, most commonly composed of sand, water and lime. In most cases, this will be non-hydraulic hydrated lime, which is otherwise known as slaked lime, air lime or high calcium lime. In ancient times, horsehair may have been added as a reinforcing agent, while pozzolan would have been used to reduce the working time. In the modern era, fly ash or gypsum may be used to achieve this instead.
Traditional lime plaster will set and dry slowly, by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air in the presence of moisture. This means the material will take several weeks to set and may take up to a year to harden completely. Its initial drying time will usually be between one and three days, though this will depend on the surrounding temperature when the lime plaster was first applied.
It must be noted that this material should only be applied in temperatures above 5°C, and it will not set when submerged in water.
The Beneficial Features of Lime Plaster
It is only natural to want to know the benefits of the material you are planning on using to carry out a complete restoration of any older property, or to bring fresh, stylish aspects to a newer build. When you decide on high-quality lime plaster for your planned work, you will be delighted to discover a myriad of advantageous features. We have listed these for your convenience and consideration:
- Lime plaster is noted to be a breathable material; it stabilises the internal humidity of a property by absorbing and releasing moisture
- Because of its breathability, it is less prone to condensation and is able to keep an interior space warmer
- The elevated pH of the material prevents fungi from growing
- When the material is fully set, it becomes extremely hard and may potentially last for thousands of years due to its imperishable nature
- It is water-resistant and capable of withstanding the elements, and so may be used for exterior features and surfaces
- It is environmentally friendly, as it reabsorbs carbon dioxide and the manufacturing process creates less embodied carbon than cement
- Its environmentally friendly nature has kept it a popular choice for contractors in the modern era, whether they are intending to build a completely new structure or are carrying out planned restoration work
