What is Lime Plaster?
Lime plaster is a type of plaster building material composed of sand, water and lime. This will, in most cases, be non-hydraulic hydrated lime, which is otherwise known as slaked lime, high calcium lime or air lime. Ancient lime plaster used for building work may have also contained horse hair to offer reinforcement to structures, as well as pozzolan in order to reduce the working time.
Traditional lime plaster dries slowly, by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air in the presence of moisture. As such, it may take several weeks to set and up to a year to harden entirely. The initial drying time will most often be between one and three days, depending on the surrounding temperature when it was first applied.
This variety of plaster should only be applied in temperatures above 5°C.
The Beneficial Features of Lime Plaster
It is understandable that you may wish to know the benefits and advantages being offered to your property, whenever you are in the process of selecting a product to decorate, refurbish or restore it to its former glory. For finely made and applied lime plastering these are multiple, and may be utilised in ways you may have not yet imagined. We have listed these for your convenience and consideration:
- The material is breathable, in that it stabilises the internal humidity of a building by absorbing and releasing moisture
- Once it has set, it is extremely hard, with an imperishable nature that could see it last for thousands of years
- The material’s water-resistant properties ensure that it remains resistant to the elements, allowing for its use on exterior surfaces
- The manufacturing process used to create lime plaster also creates less embodied carbon than cement and it reabsorbs carbon dioxide. As such, it is also considered environmentally friendly
- The material’s environmentally friendly nature has allowed it to gain popularity among contractors for modern buildings, keeping it in vogue as a choice for any newer structure, as well as period properties that require restoration
