What is Lime Plaster?

Lime plaster is a term often applied to building projects but not always explained. We are more than capable of answering, however. Lime plaster is a variety of plaster building material, composed of a mixture of sand, water and lime. In most cases, this will be non-hydraulic hydrated lime, otherwise called slaked lime, high calcium lime or air lime. In ancient times, lime plaster may have also contained horse hair to act as a reinforcing agent, alongside pozzolan to reduce the working time.

Traditional lime plaster will dry slowly, by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air in the presence of moisture. Because of this trait, it will take several weeks to set and may take up to a year to harden entirely. Depending on the surrounding temperature when the material was first applied, the initial drying time may be between one and three days.

It must be noted that this variety of plaster should only be applied in temperatures above 5°C.

The Beneficial Features of Lime Plaster

It is only natural to want to know the benefits that come with any material you will be using to decorate or refurbish a newer property, or even if you are intending to restore an older property to its golden age. When you select superior quality lime plastering, you will be delighted to discover a multitude of benefits and advantages. We have listed these for your consideration:

  • Lime plaster is a breathable material, stabilising the internal humidity of a property by absorbing and releasing moisture
  • The elevated pH of the material prevents fungi from growing
  • Once the material has set it is extremely hard, with the potential to last for thousands of years owing to its imperishable nature
  • Its water-resistant properties ensure it remains strong against the elements, so it may be used for exterior surfaces
  • The material is widely considered to be environmentally friendly, as the manufacturing process creates less embodied carbon than cement. It also reabsorbs carbon dioxide
  • Lime plaster also remains in vogue as a modern building material and as a material for restoration, owing to its environmentally friendly nature
