Our nominated project, The Grand Hotel in Birmingham, has been shortlisted in the Heritage Plastering category. All projects entered in the Contractors Awards are visited by two independent judges for evaluation. The Awards are open to any FIS member with contractual responsibility for the project. Winners of the awards will be announced at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 9 June 2022.
About the nominated project
The Grand Hotel Birmingham is a landmark building with a fascinating and extensive history. It is one of the best surviving examples of Victorian architecture in Birmingham and holds Grade II* listed status. The hotel closed in 2002 and, following a £45 million refit, has reopened almost 20 years after it shut down.
Artisan Plastercraft was responsible for plaster restoration and repair in several different areas of the building. This included reinstating new elevations of decorative plaster mouldings – cornice, picture rails etc.; providing conservation and repairs to existing mouldings, and the manufacture and installation of new fibrous plaster mouldings in their entirety to match what would have been original. We also undertook a programme of lime plaster repairs to a number of interior walls.
The architects orchestrating the restoration were Arup and the main appointed contractor was GRAHAM.
The shortlist for the Heritage Plastering category is available to view on the FIS website.
